Ensuring CMMC Compliance

In order to receive DoD contracts in the past, DFARS 7012 and NIST SP 800-171 standards needed to be met. These standards relied on self-evaluation and led to several security breaches.

To prevent further incidents, the DoD released their new model for cybersecurity, Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification. CMMC reframes and redefines the protection of Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI). Simply put, CMMC is the next step after DFARS. It builds on existing standards of protection and adds a verification process.

At its core, CMMC yields many of the same results as DFARS. The goal is to protect CUI and ensure contractors’ security measures accomplish that. But CMMC has a different structure of compliance. There are five levels of maturity that DoD contractors can meet. These levels are defined by the specific data handled as well as the intricacy of the jobs you perform.
